Born to HypnoBirth
HypnoBirthing is an antenatal education programme, which teaches self hypnosis, relaxation and breathing techniques to prepare the mind and body for a calm and gentle pregnancy, birth and parenthood.
The birth of a baby is a normal event that many women have accomplished instinctively for thousands of years. These days, very few of us have been with our sisters, friends and aunties while they are birthing so our only experience is second hand stories or One Born Every Minute. These stories are often dramatised to make them more interesting, but the truth is that many labours are pretty straight forward when they are allowed to unfold naturally. In my classes, I talk a lot about the normal progression of birth and how your body and baby were made to birth easily. This helps parents to understand that labour can be a positive and comfortable experience, whatever that birth will be like for you. We also cover techniques to overcome and eliminate the fear of pregnancy and birth that so many of us face.
We are becoming more and more aware of the connection between the mind and body. Many of us use Apps and programmes in mindfulness and meditation to help us cope with the demands of daily life. Research tells us that our state of mind has an effect on our body and how it functions. Fear causes a physical reaction in our bodies by tensing muscles and reducing the juicy, feel good hormones that make birth run smoothly. It makes sense to prepare the mind for a demanding and powerful experience like childbirth.
Labour doesn’t always have to be a painful and traumatic experience. We use carefully selected recordings, music and sensory cues to train yourself to relax your mind and your muscles. In this way, your birthing body is convinced that there is no danger and reduces the amount of stress hormones that are released. I teach you further exercises, massage and comfort techniques to release your own endorphins, which will help you to manage the intensity of labour and birth. Staying relaxed in this way also allows enough oxygenated blood to get to baby to keep them happy throughout the process.

The course is 3-4 Classes held over a few weeks to gently introduce the philosophy of calm birth and build on the knowledge and techniques gradually. I will teach you how to achieve self hypnosis, i.e. deep relaxation. Hypnosis is often seen as something scary or mysterious. Actually, it’s just a natural state of mind that we all experience when we’re daydreaming about that tropical island or falling off to sleep. You will feel fantastically relaxed but highly focused and aware of what is going on around you. With practice, it becomes easier and easier to achieve this relaxation and you’ll want to practice all the time! You feel total control and learn to trust that your body and baby know how to birth instinctively.
